WHEN THE WORLD PULLS YOU DOWN
Steve Goodier
A man recently wrote to me that he was upset about how people in
business continually take advantage by not standing behind their
products or otherwise offering inferior service. How do you stay
positive and healthy in this kind of environment, he wondered?
He related this example: "I recently tried getting the brakes fixed
on my car. I took it to one place three times and spent around $400.
They still didn't work. I had enough and went to the actual
dealership. I have been there three times, have spent $400 more
dollars, and they still aren't right." He mentioned that he knew
enough about automobile mechanics to be aware of what the problem was.
But he asked, "What about the woman or man who doesn't know much about
cars?" He was worried about how others take advantage of innocent
victims. "The thought of this makes me so angry. I hate seeing others
(taking advantage) of good people. I can't stand to watch this
happen."
I know it is difficult to stay positive in a negative world; healthy
in a discouraging environment. Keeping a good attitude in spite of all
the hassles and unfairness of our complicated lives is a full-time
job!
We recently returned from a visit with our son in Peru. Several times
during the visit he expressed the same discouragement. He was
introducing us to a country and people he cares for deeply, and was
frequently upset at how some people and businesses over-charged or
otherwise took advantage of his naive parents from North America. Then
he made an insightful statement: "It's too bad they are so poor they
feel they have to treat you that way." Where he was previously angry,
he now felt compassion! Where he had once wanted to lash out, he now
wanted to reach out.
The next time someone takes advantage of my generosity, my ignorance
or my vulnerable position, I will recite his words to myself: "It's
too bad they are so poor in character they feel they have to behave
this way." For we may be rich in things, yet still poor. There is also
poverty of the mind and heart. A heart filled with mistrust, avarice
and a preoccupation with self interest is poor indeed. But one filled
with love, trust, generosity, goodness, joy and peace is a heart
overflowing with abundant wealth. There are no greater riches than
those that are spiritual.
The next time the world tries to pull you down, don't lash out --
reach out. Share from the wealth of your spirit. You'll never, never
run out.
