That Antacid Threat Looms Large!
Lena Sanchez
According to a Gallup survey in 2001, nearly 30% of all
Americans were taking some kind of antacid on a regular
basis. Bet it has increased significantly since then. For
this we can give thanks to the big drug companies'
multimillion-dollar TV advertising campaigns, leading
people to believe that antacids are a risk-free solution
to their digestion problems.
You'd think that those cute little tablets and capsules
were some kind of candy the way people are popping
them for the least little stomach discomfort. The idea
perpetrated by the advertising campaigns is that they
are safe¡
Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. When
used regularly, antacids are one of the most
dangerous things you can put into your mouth!
The New England Journal of Medicine (JAMA) had
a report from a study, conducted in Sweden, which
found a strong and unmistakable relationship between
cancer of the esophagus (the tube that links the
throat to the stomach) and the most common cause
of heartburn, known as acid reflux. You know the
one that the commercials tout the little purple pill
is for!
Acid reflux occurs when the valve at the top of the
stomach leaks (reflux) allows acid and other material
from the stomach to back up into the esophagus,
causing the pain that's so familiar to millions. That's
why it's advisable not to eat within three hours of
going to sleep. A lying-down position can trigger acid
reflux and a lot of pain.
That Swedish study also shows that antacids do not
reduce the cancer risk. In fact they only mask the
symptoms. Where have I seen that before?
12,000 American people die every year from
esophageal cancer. And its major early warning
sign is heartburn.
New York University Medical Center's Dr. Lawrence
Cohen, has gone on record by stating, "Heartburn
must be taken seriously, both by the public and
by physicians who are treating our patients."
Dr. Malcolm Robinson did an extensive study on
chronic stomach discomfort. He said that it can
be the result of so many different serious disorders
and not to be taken lightly.
Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine
reported on Dr. Robinson's in-depth report stated:
"The continuous use of antacids may result in acid
rebound, diarrhea and constipation and exacerbate
the symptoms of hypertension and congestive
heart failure."
Antacids suppress the hydrochloric acid in your
system much needed for digestion and health.
Antacids can also mask major heart problems,
acid rebound, plus even more digestive problems!
My friends, this isn't progress. This is insanity
perpetrated by the hype of the drug company's ad
campaigns! And it's something to think about the
next time your reach for an antacid.
A new health threat just might be growing inside you
as well!
There's an excellent chance that a large glob of foreign
material is accumulating right now in your stomach or
small intestine causing symptoms or not! That mass is
known as a bezoar. The problem is being seen more
and more in the older population. The antacid habit
can make it far worse and more likely. That's another
article¡ The moral of the story. Don't pop antacids.
A few suggestions before running off to your doctor are -
1. Take a natural digestive enzyme at meals to help
digest your foods. Suck on a mint following eating or
have a cup of mint tea with honey. All help digest and
prevent stomach upsets.
2. Pay attention when your body says the stomach is
upset. If you are not taking a natural food enzyme or
Probiotics to keep the intestinal tract balanced it can
cause serious problems. But Masking with antacids
can cause even more serious problems. For more

3. If you know you have acid reflux put a brick under
both legs at the head of your bed. The incline is
gradual and you or your significant other probably
won't even notice it, but it's enough to keep the reflux
from creating problems during the night.
If you continue to have ongoing problems after trying
all the above, you could be in danger of serious
stomach cancers! Or if you've been taking antacids
over a long time for ongoing stomach discomfort have
it check out by your physician!
