Spread the Word! Healthy Changes in the USA!
Mary Porter
Did you know? They are working on the good old Food Pyramid.
But they aren't finished yet. They have come up with a great
resource, though. New Dietary Guidelines released January
12, 2005.
The excellent information that has been produced in this
resource won't do any good if people aren't aware of it. So
do something for yourself, and check it out. And tell your
friends!
The newly released report can be seen at
http://www.healthierus.gov/dietaryguidelines/ . You will
find loads of recommendations for a truly healthier diet.
There are lots of links for different interests, like just
for men, or women, or kids.
From this site you can find some of the proposed changes to
the good old Food Pyramid. They were accepting comments at
one time, but the site lets you know that they are no longer
accepting comments. Hopefully the new and improved Pyramid
will be ready soon.
You can access a BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator at
http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/caloriesneed.htm and find out how
serious you need to be about improving your health from that
perspective. It doesn't tell you all you need to know to
improve your overall health, but it can tell you quite
quickly if you need to reduce your daily caloric intake.
There is an awesome resource from this report that is
specifically for heart health. It's called the Dash Plan .
Research has been done and indicates that the recommended
dietary changes in this program can reduce blood pressure in
hypertensive subjects. The plan combines a better diet in
general, with more fruits and vegetables, as well as
decreasing salt intake. It's pretty exciting if you ask me.
You can download a pdf of the Dash Plan at
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/new_dash.pdf
Another really positive element in this release is that
exercise is highly encouraged. There is a President's
Challenge you can become active with. You can do it by
yourself, or with a group. You could even form your own
group! Great idea! Information on the President's Challenge
is at http://www.presidentschallenge.org/ . There are
different activities for different age groups. You can
download an activity log to keep track of the points you
earn for a lot of common activities.
There is a pdf brochure you can download at
http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/pdf/brochure.pdf
It is an overview of the new Dietary Guidelines released in
January. There is a nice explanation on how to read food
labels, and what is important to look for. Also has a safe
temperature guide for foods.
There is a lot of more good information you'll find when you
go to the site. I just thought I would give you the
highlights.
The important thing is getting the information out! Spread
the word! You might help somebody improve their health!
