Resolutions or Real Solutions?
Helene Haber
OK. New Year's arrived and left. Some of those New Year's resolutions
are still in play and others have fallen by the wayside. The attempt to
change is really what's important. By making an attempt, even an unsuccessful
one, you are on your way to making things better. Very, very few people who
have quit smoking, lost weight or made any sustainable change have done so on
their first try.
Resolutions are wonderful. They are particularly good to give you a
jump-start on getting what you want. However for day-to-day living,
resolutions only take you so far. What you need is a way to get through the
day when the excitement of making resolutions is a faded memory.
You need a plan - a strategy. Without that, you are as they say "dead in
the water." Remember what you need to do to implement the change. If you
want to lose 15 pounds, think about what needs to happen in order for you
lose those fifteen pounds. Whatever food that's in the house that qualifies
as "junk" food has to vacate the premises. Sooner or later you'll know the
food is in the house even if it's stashed away in the hidden recesses of
garage. No more big bags of chips or cookies. If you truly crave salt or
sugar, keep individual servings so you're aware of what a portion looks like
and can eat your favorites for enjoyment not in excess. Eat everything in
sight the moment you get home from work? Have a snack at about 3:00 o'clock
at work that has some protein and carbohydrates. You get the idea. Plan
ahead and come up with viable substitutes so you don't regress to familiar,
bad habits. Most importantly, act on your plans.
You'll also want to be clear on the benefits you will gain once you've
achieved your goal. See the possibilities. It's more than the 15 pounds.
It's more energy for, more confidence and living an extraordinary life.
The date of January 1 or February 1 or Monday or Sunday is completely
arbitrary. You are not waiting for a specific date. Do not let the calendar
dictate your actions. Just be true to your internal calendar. Do not be
hard on yourself if you're not ready to act. When you're ready, you will
achieve what your mind tells you you can achieve. You know when you're ready
and I call this the "moment of truth". It's when you take the first step even
a baby step to commitment and then on to action. Obtaining a healthy weight
has become a priority.
What is not arbitrary is the reason you are making the change. You may
have heard this before but it is worth repeating. Make the change for
yourself not for anyone else. No one else can do it. You alone do the work
for yourself. Others can support you and guide you. However, unless someone
is spoon-feeding you, you lift the spoon to your mouth to gain nourishment.
You have a plan, the knowledge of the good things losing weight will
give you - feeling good, feeling confident and having more energy - and the
belief that you can do it. The external search is not where you will find
the way to lose weight. It is only more illusions of the quick fix. You will
change and see weight come off when you've adjusted your beliefs from the
inside out. Go ahead. Trust yourself to do the work on your time.
