Mall-O for fun indoor fitness Connie Kroneman
What is a Mall-O?
a) a milkshake beverage
b) a marshmallow brand
c) a surprised teenager stating where she spent all day Saturday
d) an orienteering course set up in an indoor shopping mall
If you said c, you were close. The answer is d. A Mall-O is a
great way to get some exercise, indoors, in a social setting. It is based
on the orienteering concept, with some modifications. Orienteering is
actually a competitive sport that involves participants doing a timed run
through a forest with only a map and a compass to guide them to the flags that
mark the course.
Of course, with a Mall-O, you're not going to be running through your local
mall with a map and compass. But you will have a sheet that lists where
the targets are located. The targets could be as simple as a description
of an item in a store. The Mall-O walkers would then need to go to the
store and note the price of the item on their key sheet to verify that they
walked the course. It's really like an Easter Egg hunt for adults.
What do you need to do a Mall-O?
1) Someone to walk the course and create the key sheets.
2) People to walk the course, with pencils to note the prices of the items
listed on the key sheets.
3) For small malls, there may be a need to use a series of consecutive key
sheets. This increases the distance traveled to complete the full course.
That's really all there is to it. There are a great number of variations that
can be used in a Mall-O. Here are some suggestions:
Mall-O Basic
All of the participants start from the same place at the same time.
They individually visit each identified store and note the price of the
item. The first one done "wins".
Mall-O Hunt
This differs from the Basic in that the store name is not identified.
The participants have a list of items and they need to find a store that carries
the item and note the price. When everyone is finished, meet and compare
the prices. This is ideal if the course setter is doing some serious
shopping for the lowest price on an item.
Mall-O Mixer
This differs from the Basic in that the participants walk the course in small
groups. Each keysheet contains no more than 4 items. There are no
less than 4 keysheets needed to complete the course. The most important
aspect is that after a group has completed a keysheet, it returns to the
starting point to pick up the next key sheet, and the people must split off to
form new groups with other people that have also completed a
keysheet.
