Looking through the Eyes of Terri Schiavo
RobinRenee Bridges
As a chaplain, I thought some of you might be interested in
a very different point of view about this. I'm not
suggesting that you believe me, nor am I arguing for a
"side." This is just what the Sanctuary teaches, and this is
what I believe.
Terri's soul is alive and well, and it's still attached to
her body. Her soul is not in a state of limbo. It's aware of
everything going on around her, just like near-death
experiencers can be aware of their surroundings. Terri is
actively participating in a spiritual change in our society.
This is a test for us...to see if we are spiritually mature
enough to do the right thing.
And what is the right thing in God's eyes? It's incredibly
simple. God gives life, and He brings it home when it's
time.
I keep reading that Terri is braindead. But she breathes,
swallows, digests, metabolizes, and excretes on her own.
Only a living brain can do those things.
Before the advent of feeding tubes when someone was unable
to feed him or herself, the family hand fed the loved one.
Now that Terri's feeding tube has been removed, if she were
hand fed, she would continue to live. Terri is not on "life
support." She doesn't need it. To feed those who cannot feed
themselves is an act of kindness and mercy, something we
Americans pride ourselves on.
To withhold food and water from a living human is
unthinkable. Even though Terri's brain may not be aware of
it, and even though she may not suffer pain from it, our
society will be held accountable for its choice. To give
food and water is not a matter of artificially extending
life. When it's time for Terri to die, her body will shut
down.
The Sanctuary teaches that the soul is the "living" part of
us. The physical body is just a temporary chemistry and
physics lab. When the soul detaches, the body dies. The soul
is not "inside" the body. It interfaces with the body
through the autonomic nervous system at the brainstem.
The soul is the source of all our thoughts, comprehension,
imagination, and memories. Even though the brain is
unconscious or severely compromised, the soul still carries
out these functions in its world of spirit. Neuroscientists
are unsuccessfully trying to figure out where and how these
most human characteristics arise.
The living, thinking, remembering part of Terri, her soul,
is not horrified with the condition of her body. It's not
important to her anymore. What is important to her is the
spiritual growth for our nation that can spring forth amidst
the furor surrounding Terri.
And she is praying for us.
